The Fripp Island Women's Club awarded its second The Water is Wide / Pat Conroy Scholarship to Shay Middleton. Shay is the mother of two and a Junior Sociology Major at the University of South Carolina Beaufort. The $2000 award was presented by Ann Hoyle, Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee on January 9th at the monthly Fripp Island Community Dinner. Special guests included members of Pat Conroy's family (pictured above).
The Scholarship is named in honor of Pat Conroy, the beloved low country and world famous author. In his 1972 memoir, The Water is Wide, Pat described the challenges he faced while teaching students on remote Daufauski Island. The Scholarship is open to any USCB student who is 21 years or older, and a Beaufort County resident whose education may have been interrupted or who desires to continue their education at any USCB campus.
The Fripp Island Women's Club and private donors have funded two scholarships to date. Those interested in applying for the next scholarship can contact the Financial Aid Office at USCB or visit the Fripp Island Women's club website.
